Trio of Cavaliers come off the board in the MLS Superdraft
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS)-- A trio of Cavaliers were selected in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft, becoming the first Cavaliers to be drafted since 2019. Defender Aidan O’Connor (New York Red Bulls) and forward Stephen Annor (Houston Dynamo) were drafted in the first round. Leo Afonso, Virginia’s three-time captain, was selected in the second round by Inter Miami.
First off the board was center back Aidan O’Connor. The transfer was crucial in keeping six clean sheets for a Virginia team that held its opponents to 0.95 goals per game. In two seasons at Virginia, O’Connor appeared in 31 matches while making 27 starts. He scored one goal and a pair of assists during his time with Virginia.
Later in the first round Stephen Annor was drafted by the Houston Dynamo with the 26th overall pick. Annor had just signed a Generation adidas contract earlier in the day, allowing the freshman draft eligibility. Annor lead the Cavaliers with 10 goals this season, earning him the honor of being named a 2023 United Soccer Coaches All-American. He is just the fourth Virginia freshman to ever receive the honor.
Rounding out the draft three time captain Leo Afonso came off the board with the 3rd pick in the second round. Alfonso is now the first Cavalier to ever be drafted by Inter-Miami. Despite missing a few games this past season with injuries Alfonso was a consistent threat on attack, leading the team in goals in both 2021 and 2022.
Since its inception nearly 24 years ago, 34 Cavaliers have been drafted in the MLS Superdraft.
