WASHINGTON (CBS19 NEWS) -- Chaos erupted on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, after President Joe Biden's son, Hunter Biden, unexpectedly showed up to a House committee meeting where lawmakers were considering holding the younger Biden in contempt in response to his refusal to comply with congressional subpoenas for closed-door testimony last month.

"Hunter Biden is just one more key witness to the President's corruption," said Fifth District Representative Bob Good.

Good was not at the meeting but explained why Republican lawmakers will not accept Hunter Biden's proposal of a public testimony.

"They know publicly he's just going to take the Fifth [Amendment]," Good said.

Good says Republicans want a closed-door deposition for another reason: unlimited time. Members of Congress, according to Good, wouldn't be limited to five-minute questioning.

"It would be a much more thorough and helpful interrogation that would be helpful in getting information that would confirm the President's involvement in the bribery, influence peddling, and the corruption scandal that seems to be encompassing this family," he said.

Biden's attorney doesn’t trust the Republicans.

"A behind-closed-doors deposition, tactic that the Republicans have repeatedly misused in their political crusade to selectively leak and mischaracterize what witnesses have said," said Abbe Lowell.

The committee voted to advance resolutions recommending Hunter Biden be held in criminal contempt of Congress, sending the matter to the House floor for a full vote.
