CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS)-- The two time defending national champs UVA men's tennis picked up right where they left off taking down Liberty and JMU to open the season. The pair of victories now extend their win streak to 24 matches.

The Cavaliers posted a 6-1 victory against Liberty and later topped James Madison 7-0 in the second match of a doubleheader.

In the opener, grad transfers James Hopper and Edorado Graziani picked up a 6-1 win at the top doubles court before seniors Chris Rodesch and Jeffrey von der Schulenburg clinched the point on court two. 

After winning the doubles point freshman Dylan Dietrich made his collegiate debut in dominant fashion, taking down Liberty’s Thando Longwe-Smit in straight sets on court 2. Next door on court three von der Schulenburg gave the Cavaliers a 3-0 advantage with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Deji Thomas-Smith. Hopper clinched the win for the 'Hoos on court 4 winning in straight sets over Luis Felipe Miguel. Virginia would play out the match and win 6-1. 

In the second match of the day Hopper and Graziani opened play against JMU with a 6-1 win on the top doubles court, with sophomores Douglas Yaffa and Ty Switzer clinching the point with a win on three.

Graziani played in the number 1 spot in the second match, posting a 6-2, 6-1 win against Youssef Sadek that clinched the victory. Next door on court three Hopper blanked JMU’s Esteve Agusti 6-0, 6-0. Switzer, who did not play last spring due to an injury, picked up his first career singles win in a dual match, topping JMU’s Aathreya Mahesh 6-3, 6-3 on court six. Yaffa completed the shutout with a 7-5, 2-6, 10-7 win against Markus Giersiepen on court five.

Top ranked Virginia now hits the road to take on no. 3 Texas next Thursday January 18th at 6pm.
