Work begins on new roundabout in Louisa County
LOUISA COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Construction is getting underway for a new roundabout at the intersection of New Bridge Road and Zachary Taylor Highway in Louisa County.
The Virginia Department of Transportation is starting work on the project in front of Dickinson’s Store.
It will help with the flow of traffic in the area, especially during the warmer months, once the roundabout is completed.
Officials say the intersection is one of the most dangerous in Virginia, and it can become relatively busy during the summer when thousands of people visit Lake Anna.
Lou Hatter, with VDOT’s Culpeper District, says the roundabout is going in instead of a traffic light because the roundabout will be safer.
"If you think about an intersection either controlled by a stop sign or a traffic signal, typically traffic is flowing at highway speed on one leg of it and then someone who is trying to enter from a stop sign or when the light turns green, they are at a low speed and so if there is a crash it tends to be at a high speed involved,” he said. “With a roundabout, everyone has to slow down as they approach the roundabout by the virtual design of the roundabout. You have to slow down in order to negotiate the approach and entrance of the roundabout."
The project is expected to be completed by early December.
