Rep. Good quick to switch endorsement to Trump after DeSantis drops out
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va (CBS19 NEWS) -- Fifth District Representative Bob Good was interviewed on CNN recently and was forced to defend his words after a video was leaked of him explaining why he endorsed former Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis over former President Donald Trump.
The interview took place after DeSantis dropped out of the race, causing Good to switch his endorsement to Trump.
Good's primary opponent, State Senator John McGuire, and his campaign have been referencing the interview and calling Good a quote "never-Trumper."
"I can't sit by and watch and then regret we nominated Trump," said Good in a video.
It's a line that Good claims was part of a larger sentence.
"That video was created by a campaign opponent who sliced it up and edited it to take out the complementary praise statements that I said about President Trump. It's a highly edited video," said Good during a CNN interview.
In a CNN interview with Kaitlan Collins, Good defended his official endorsement of Donald Trump for the Republican nomination after he was caught on camera being critical of the former president in the past.
"You take sentences, and you take part of the sentence out. You get a different conclusion from that sentence or a different inference," he said.
"He does a lot of things that don't make sense. I think it goes back to he's trying to save his butt," said McGuire.
McGuire, who has been endorsed by House Republicans like Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia, references the interview.
"He realized he messed up, and then he goes, 'Oh no, I didn't say that," said McGuire.
Good says he's for Trump and that he was just explaining why he decided to first endorse Florida Governor Ron DeSantis over Trump.
"It takes out the part where I praise President Trump, and I say that he was the greatest president of my lifetime," said Good.
McGuire thinks Good says things to maintain popularity and get what he wants.
"So I think a big part of this campaign is going to be about representing people in Congress is about protecting your butt and creating a power to protect your butt or is about serving we the people, serving the commonwealth, and saving our country? I think that's a big contrast," said McGuire.
CBS19 has reached out to the Good campaign and has not heard back.
