ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The Albemarle County Police Department conducted speed enforcement operations on Tuesday on Route 29 near Fontaine Avenue and in the area of Rio Mills Road, which have been identified as high traffic and high crash zones.

Officers staged in those areas used radar speed checks to stop vehicles that were identified as going over the speed limit.

According to a release, 123 vehicles were stopped and a total of 131 summons were issued. Out of the 123 stops, 17 of the vehicles were going more than 20 miles per hour over the posted speed limit.

ACPD says these traffic stops were a way to engage with drivers to explain why these kinds of violations are taken seriously.

Police say speeding endangers everyone because it increases the potential to lose control as a driver, the likelihood of a rollover, and the severity of any crashes that result.

Officers were in each area for about three hours.
