CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) --  A Charlottesville dog has been nominated for a big award, America’s Favorite Pet.

Winston is a 4-year old Basset Hound/dachshund mix that was rescued from the Southeastern Basset Rescue in South Carolina.

He was being fostered in North Carolina, and then was adopted by Christina Mathieson.

Winston is very calm, very sweet and loves people and animals.

While winning the contest and the $10,000 prize would be great, Mathieson hopes his presence will raise awareness about rescuing dogs like him.

“I entered him in the contest because he hasn’t had the best life, he’s had sort of a sad life, no one’s ever really loved him like I do now. If I win the $10,000, I will put it towards making sure he has the best life ever, all the toys he could ever want, and probably save some for a rainy day,” said Mathieson.

Some special qualities about Winston are his tuxedo coat, his love for true crime shows, and his love of meeting and making new friends.

Voting for the Top 10 ends on Thursday night. People can vote for Winston here
