FAUQUIER COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A Charlottesville resident was killed in a weekend crash in Fauquier County.

The Virginia State Police reports the crash occurred around 10:25 p.m. Saturday on Shipps Tore Road, west of the intersection with Marsh Road.

A 2018 Ford Explorer heading west on Shipps Tore Road failed to maneuver a curve and ran off the right side of the road.

The Ford then hit a tree.

The driver, identified as 37-year-old Shannon P. Day of Sumerduck, suffered minor injuries and refused medical treatment.

The passenger, identified as 50-year-old Claire E. Caruso of Charlottesville, died at the scene of the crash.

Both women were wearing seat belts.

Day has been charged with one count of driving under the influence: involuntary manslaughter; one count of driving under the influence; one count of reckless driving: failure to maintain proper control; and one count of open container.

She was taken to the Fauquier Adult Detention Center where she is being held without bond.

The crash is still under investigation.
