UPDATE 3 p.m.: One northbound lane of Interstate 81 has reopened. Traffic is still backed up for several miles.


AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Part of northbound Interstate 81 is shut down in Augusta County due to a crash involving a tractor trailer transporting cattle.

The Virginia State Police reports the three-vehicle crash occurred around 11:40 a.m. Monday at the 232 mile marker.

Several cattle have escaped from the trailer and are running loose along the interstate.

The Virginia Department of Transportation reports traffic is backed up more than nine miles as of 1:30 p.m.

A detour has been put in place, directing drivers to take exit 227 and then use Laurel Hill Road to get to Lee Highway and get around the crash.

VSP troopers, VDOT, the Augusta County EMS/Fire and Augusta County Animal Control are on the scene working to round up the loose cattle as well as evaluate the animals in the trailer.
