UPDATE 11:30 p.m.: Eastbound Interstate 64 has reopened following Wednesday's police activity.

The Waynesboro Police Department is investigating the initial incident on Hopeman Parkway.

An adult man was shot and taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Per WPD policy, the city officers involved in the shooting on the interstate have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation, which is being conducted by the Virginia State Police.


UPDATE 10:05 p.m.: The Virginia State Police has released some information regarding Wednesday's incident on Afton Mountain.

According to police, VSP and the Waynesboro Police Department are investigating an officer-involved shooting on Interstate 64.

Shortly before 5 p.m., the Waynesboro Police Department received a call about a shooting at Parkway Village Apartments, but when officers arrived, they saw a suspect vehicle leaving.

Some officers stayed at the apartment complex while others tried to stop the suspect vehicle, resulting in a pursuit that crossed multiple jurisdictions.

The chase ended at the 102 mile marker on eastbound 64 when the vehicle ran off the side of the interstate and hit a guardrail just before 5:40 p.m.

For about an hour after that crash, VSP reports officers tried to get the driver to surrender, but then shots were fired.

The man was taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

No officers were injured during these incidents, and police recovered a firearm at the scene of the crash on the interstate.

Investigations into these incidents are ongoing.


Update 9 p.m.: The Virginia Department of Transportation says a detour in the westbound lanes of Interstate 64 on Afton Mountain has been lifted.

However, the eastbound lanes are still closed due to police activity.

Drivers are being directed off the interstate at Exit 99 in Afton. 

There is no word at this time as to when the road will reopen, but an extended closure is expected.


ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Drivers on Interstate 64 have been severely impacted by police activity on Afton Mountain.

At this time, there is no official word on what happened.

As of 7 p.m. Wednesday, the eastbound lanes of the interstate were still closed, and multiple law enforcement vehicles were visible on a Virginia Department of Transportation traffic camera at mile marker 102.

One westbound was also closed for a time but has since reopened.
