FORT CARSON, Co. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A U.S. Army soldier with ties to the University of Virginia has been killed in a non-combat-related training accident.

According to a release from Fort Carson dated Monday, 23-year-old First Lieutenant Zachary Galli died as a result of a training accident at the Joint Readiness Training Center.

He was an explosive ordnance disposal officer assigned to the 749th Ordnance Company, 242nd Explosive Ordnance Battalion, 71st EOD Group at Fort Carson in Colorado.

“It is with an extremely heavy heart that I inform you of the passing of First Lieutenant Zachary Galli,” said Colonel Brennan Fitzgerald, commander of the 71st EOD. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family of the Galli family, the 749th EOD Co., and the greater EOD community.”

Galli’s LinkedIn profile shows he was a native of Williamsburg who graduated from UVA’s ROTC program in 2022.

The U.S. Army says the accident is under investigation.
