CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Friday morning, Charlottesville Police cleared out an encampment underneath the railroad bridge that crosses Preston Avenue.

Charlottesville Police Chief Michael Kochis says the department has received complaints about individuals living underneath the bridge, leaving trash lying around, and even lighting open fires.

CPD identified the property belongs to Norfolk Southern Railway and informed the company about the encampment.

Kochis said that Norfolk Southern told CPD that they did not want anyone under the bridge for safety reasons and requested that everything be removed.

"We did go up there several weeks ago and gave notice and talked to folks and, from what I understand, they all left. But, there was a lot of stuff under there that needed to be cleaned out. So, that's what they are doing today," said Kochis.

Norfolk Southern did not respond to a request for comment.
