CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Receiving an old-fashioned letter from someone is always a surprise in today's digital age of text messages and phone calls. Some people may even see a letter as a symbol of something deeper.

Loving Arms Care, a private agency in Charlottesville that specializes in tailored care solutions for people that may need extra help, is kicking off its new pen pal program soon. They're calling it "Handle With Care: Pen Pal Project."

Registered pen pals aren't just in the immediate area. Some live as far away as Florida.

Each letter will be sent to a person in an assisted living community.

Kaitlyn Duvalois with Loving Arms Care says it’s her passion project.

"I'm really trying to combat loneliness. We go into facilities a lot and we see people sitting alone and we see those who may not have family members, and I just think everybody should have someone. Interaction is important and isolation can be really damaging to someone," says Duvalois.

A community workshop will be held Thursday at the Center at Belvedere. It will be held monthly.

Duvalois hopes the program will grow to the point where it can reach individuals, not just in assisted living facilities, but also those who are homebound. To find out more, click here.
