CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The intersection of Hydraulic Road and Hillsdale Drive will be closing for several weeks.

The Virginia Department of Transportation says a contractor will close the signalized intersection on July 8 as part of the project to convert it into a two-lane roundabout with pedestrian crosswalks on all four approaches.

According to a release, once this work begins, drivers will not be able to use the intersection.

However, there will be several detours

they can take to get around the work.

Westbound drivers on the Route 250 Bypass who want to use Hydraulic Road to get to Seminole Trail will have to use the exit directly onto Seminole Trail instead.

Southbound drivers on Seminole Trail who want to take Hydraulic Road to get to the bypass will need to use the exit directly onto the bypass.

There will be detour signs out to direct drivers.

VDOT says the public will still have access to all of the businesses near the intersection during this project.

This part of the project is set to be completed by Aug. 13.

The roundabout is part of a $24 million bundle of improvements that have been fully funded through SMART SCALE.

VDOT says the bundle aims to improve safety and movement as well as increase multi-modal access within the Hydraulic Road/Seminole Trail area.

The other projects include a pedestrian bridge over Seminole Trail with bus stops for future service near Zan Road, a signalized pedestrian crossing and reconfigured traffic movements at the intersection of Hydraulic Road and Seminole Trail, and improved access management at Hydraulic Road/Brandywine Drive and Hydraulic Road/Michie Drive.
