ALTOONA, Pa. (CBS19 NEWS) -- An annual campaign that supports children in need will be kicking off next week.

On July 1, Sheetz will begin the monthlong Sheetz for the Kidz campaign, which is an employee-driven charity drive.

Throughout the month, customers at Sheetz locations across the company’s footprint, including Virginia, can opt to support local families.

According to a release, customers will be able to make donations at the check-out through change boxes or by adding funds to their purchase at the point of sale.

These funds will help families get clothes, toys and other basic needs.

Additionally, the funds will help sponsor the wishes of children facing life-threatening medical conditions through Make-A-Wish.

Make-A-Wish will sponsor one child per each Sheetz operating district, which means 71 children will get a wish this year.

And the campaign has teamed up with Feeding America to help get food to children in need.

Last year, this partnership brought in $716,000, helping to provide 1.5 million meals through backpack programs, kids cafes, school and mobile pantries, and summer feeding programs.

While the campaign mainly takes place during July, customers are able to donate year-round if they so choose.

This can include donating loyalty points through the Sheetz app, adding Sheetz for the Kidz as the preferred charity to online-only Walmart orders, or online here.

Last year’s campaign raised $1.7 million.

Since it was created in 1992, Sheetz for the Kidz has helped more than 170,000 children.
