CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- Kickoff of the 2019 high school football season is officially little more than nine weeks away.
The VHSL released its preliminary master schedule for the 2019 season on Tuesday morning. Most local schools will open the season on Friday, August 30. Charlottesville will kick off a night earlier, at EC Glass on August 29, while Western Albemarle and Madison County won't open their seasons until the following weekend.
CHS is one of a few Central Virginia schools changing VHSL classifications for the 2019 season, with the Black Knights moving from Class 4 to Class 3 (Region C). Orange County is also moving down to Class 4 (Region B), while Goochland is moving up to Class 3 (Region B).
With Powhatan leaving for the Dominion District, Jefferson District play will kick off in Week 5 (September 27), with the seven remaining teams playing six district games down the stretch. Opening night in JD play will be highlighted by Western's visit to Monticello. The second week of district play includes Fluvanna -- coming off the program's first playoff appearance since 2000 -- opening JD play at home against CHS, plus Orange County visiting Louisa County in the annual "Battle for the Gordonsville Tastee Freez."
Other notable rivalry games on the JD schedule include CHS ending its regular season with back-to-back home games against Monticello (October 25) and Albemarle (November 1), and the Patriots' visit to Western also on October 25.
Highlights of the various non-district schedules include Nelson County visiting Fluvanna in Week 3, Western hosting William Monroe in Week 6, and the Green Dragons hosting Madison for that cross-county-line rivalry game in Week 4, on September 20.
Madison opens play in the new-look Bull Run District -- which added former Shenandoah District members East Rockingham, Luray, Page County at Stonewall Jackson -- on September 27 as well. Nelson County's district opener in the Governors' return to the Dogwood District is also in Week 5, at Altavista. William Monroe opens Northwestern District play in Week 7.
Goochland and Buckingham County will open James River District play by going head-to-head at Buckingham in Week 3, on September 13.
Most local teams are on the road on September 6 for Week 2, the night the Virginia football team will play William and Mary in the Wahoos' home opener. Because of that college game, Charlottesville's home opener against James Monroe will be played on Thursday, September 5. Home games at Madison County (vs. James River) and Nelson County (vs. Page County) are still scheduled for September 6, as well as Fork Union's visit to Goochland.
