CHICAGO, Il. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- Louisa County's Brandon Smith is one of five high school finalists for this year's Butkus Award, given to the best linebacker in the country.
Smith was named a finalist for the high school Butkus on Monday. The Penn State commit was the Jefferson District defensive player of the year this season, after finishing the regular season with 116 tackles, including four sacks, plus five forced fumbles.
Smith's high school career ended with last Friday's last-second loss to Eastern View in the VHSL region playoffs. Smith will enroll early at Penn State in January.
Smith is joined on that list of Butkus finalists by Nakobe Dean of Mississippi, Owen Pappoe of Georgia, and a pair of players from California (De'Gabriel Floyd and Henry To'oto'o). Dean, Smith and Pappoe are all rated as five-star players by 247Sports; To'oto'o and Floyd are both four-star recruits.
To'oto'o is committed to play at Alabama, while Dean, Pappoe and Floyd are not yet committed to college programs. All five Butkus finalists are high school seniors.
The winner of the high school Butkus Award will be announced on or before December 6.
