Crozet woman to stop delivering for Meal on Wheels

CROZET, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Polly Sheets will make her final delivery run for Meals on Wheels on Tuesday after deciding to relinquish her driver's license.

She drove for the organization in Maryland before driving in Crozet for more than 30 years.

The decision to give up her license is something she has been considering for the last year.

"I would rather turn over my driver's license than to have it taken away from me," said Sheets. "So I decided a year ago that when my driver's license was up for renewal, I would just stop driving."

Her daughter, Sue Russo, said she's proud of her mother for willingly making a tough decision.

"Mom made this choice herself," said Russo. "No one suggested it to her. She recognized that it was time and it means a lot as her daughter not to have to ask her to do that."

They both admitted that Tuesday will be a bittersweet day for them because of Sheets' love for delivering meals to Crozet residents.

"I'll be in someone else's car so that might help but I'm sure I'll feel a pang of sorrow," said Sheets.

"I think it will be a bit emotional," said Russo. "We'll probably both shed a tear because it's something that is very near and dear to her heart. And I know how hard it is for her to give that up."

Sheets is looking forward to the next chapter in her life.

"I hope to find something that I can do that will be somewhat helpful to somebody," she said.
