CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- People are reflecting on the ratification of the Bill of Rights in the U.S. Constitution.

The Jefferson Area Libertarians read the Bill of Rights out loud on the Downtown Mall on Saturday.

The Bill of Rights, or the first 10 amendments to the U.S. Constitution, was ratified on Dec. 15, 1791.

Its purpose was to limit the power of the federal government by giving the power to the people.

Organizers said our rights are being infringed upon now and it is up to the people to protect them.

"Those limitations were under attack from the very beginning," said John Munchmeyer, chairman of the Jefferson Area Libertarians. "In the past year, we've seen some more violations."

Munchmeyer said the country should be a shining light to the world with the Bill of Rights and it is the people's job to make sure that is restored.
