Kindergarteners offer the sweetest treat to senior citizens

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- On Monday afternoon, kindergarteners dressed up in their favorite costumes and served senior citizens in their first ever community service project.

More than 60 students from Meriwether Lewis Elementary performed songs at the Laurels Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. This project was the first in the school’s new program for students of all grade levels to participate in community service.

Malorie, one of the kindergarteners who performed, said that she practiced “lots.”

Music teacher Cheryl Wetmore-Simpson had been preparing her students for a couple months.

“Every day, whenever they’d see me, [the students asked] if today's the day they can come to sing for the grandmas and grandpas," she said.

Singing in English and French, the students successfully completed their first service project, with their hard work making them the sweetest treat in trick-or-treating.
