CROZET, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Patrick Estes launched his campaign for Albemarle County Sheriff at Pro Re Nata Brewery in Crozet on Thursday evening.
Estes is a former University of Virginia football player and NFL alumnus for the Buffalo Bills and San Francisco 49ers. He currently works as the regional director for RMC Events.
Estes has a history in law enforcement as a field training officer, undercover narcotics detective, and special events detective for homeland security.
He is running to replace current Sheriff Chip Harding, who will retire at the end of 2019. Estes said his goal is "to bring bold new leadership to the position."
"There are things I would like to add," said Estes. "I think Sheriff Harding has done a lot. And the programs that are in place, there are a lot of really great programs. It would be my intention to keep a lot of those programs, but then to add to them and look at what else we can do in addition to those."
Some things Estes said he would like to focus on are the opioid epidemic and more outreach to schools.
Estes is running against Chan Bryant, who is currently the Chief Deputy of the Albemarle County Sheriff's Office
