CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- People heading into the downtown Charlottesville area will find some changes at the parking garages.
The city has now coordinated the prices and schedules of both of the garages on Water Street and Market Street.
According to a release, the first hour of parking is now free for hourly parkers at both garages and both are now open 24 hours a day.
Price changes were first implemented at the Market Street garage in March.
The city reached an agreement with the Charlottesville Parking Center over the operation of Water Street and then announced its intent to operate the Water Street garage in the same manner as the one on Market.
As of Oct. 1, the rate for both garages is $2 per hour with the first hour free.
With being open 24 hours a day, people who leave the garages outside of the fee collection hours will park for free.
People who used to have to move their car before the garage closed at midnight will no longer need to do so.
Both garages also have supplemental private security guards in the evenings and the city is working on installing an upgrade to the existing security camera system in the Water Street garage.
Before the end of the year, the city says it will also install new parking equipment at both garages for a single approach for tickets and validations.
