School board appoints new principal at Cale Elementary

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Cale Elementary School has a new principal and she's a familiar face to some.

According to a release from the Albemarle County Public Schools division, Cyndi Wells will succeed Lisa Jones as the principal of the school.

Wells is the leaders of the school division's English for Speakers of Other Languages Program and is an experienced coach who has worked with administrators and teachers across the division to promote professional development.

"Her extensive experience as an educational leader maker her an ideal fit for Cale," said Deputy Superintendent Debora Collins. "Her knowledge of the structural foundations that enrich learning for young children, both in aligning curriculum to student needs and helping teachers to fulfill their highest potential will be immediate assets for Cale."

Wells has been with ACPS for 13 years, joining the division as the coordinator for support services and professional development provided to students and teachers in Title I schools, including Cale.

She was later appointed as the lead coach in the division who oversees the professional development of teachers in the division's ESOL and World Languages Programs.

The appointment came after a survey of school staff and parent communities that called for the next principal to have an understanding of bilingual education, instructional leadership and community building skills.

"It's an honor to have this opportunity to serve the Cale community full-time," said Wells. "I long have admired their accomplishments. Cale was the first school to offer Foreign Language in the Elementary School and still is the only school to offer a dual language program. Their faculty has embraced Culturally Responsive Teaching as a way of life. Their special event nights for families bring out hundreds of people to celebrate the many gifts that come from a diverse community. The commitment of the entire school to classroom innovation provides so many different paths to literacy and discovery for children."

One of her first actions was to promote Benjamin Allen from assistant to associate principal.

Wells also selected Rosaura Gonzalez-Muniz as an assistant principal, bringing her back to Cale where she was an instructional coach from her post as an assistant principal at Stone-Robinson Elementary School.

Wells is also a former Cale parent. Her daughter began kindergarten at the school in 2003.
