UVA fans relish first bowl win in 13 years

CHARLOTTE, NC (CBS19 SPORTS) -- For the second straight year, Virginia fans traveled to see the Wahoos play postseason football. For the first time since 2005, those same fans saw the Cavaliers come away with a win.

When the Belk Bowl matchup was announced, it was a trip many Virginia fans were eager to make.

“Because it's very, very irregular that we make it to a bowl game," said Virginia student Cullen Johnson. "So we just had to make it out and support the ‘Hoos any way that we could.”

“Watch some college football bowls games," said fellow student John Minor. "Also, I needed to check off the Carolina stadium for my NFL stadium trips and just ended up, yeah two down.”

For others, it was to support people associated with the bowl, like Virginia fan Susan Vrahoretis, whose daughter was playing in the marching band pregame and during halftime.

“We are just thrilled," Vrahoretis said. "Very excited to be here. Grateful to the bowl committee for giving UVA this opportunity and we hope it’s a good game."

After the Cavaliers 28-0 win over South Carolina, fans were more than happy to talk about the future of the Virginia football program.

“I was actually at the Music City Bowl the last time," remembered Scott Morris. "So to see them come here and win, it’s a great step for UVA and a great step for Charlottesville.”

“I couldn’t have asked for anything better," Virginia alum Ashley Shults said. "Being a Virginia School of Nursing graduate, back in 2002, I wasn’t able to go to the bowl game, I went this time and it was absolutely, incredible.”

“Sometimes you just watch, and you want to see it immediately, but it's nice to see it now," Darren McCauley said. "So the turnarounds a little quicker than I thought, so yes, I thought it would happen again. I thought Mendenhall and his staff would be able to lead us to this victory.”

“I was hoping," Morris added. "But we’re here and hopefully we’ll be back to another one next year.”
