Coaches try to balance Early Signing Day with practice

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- For the second straight year college football coaches will try to balance bowl practice with early signing day, which is presented more challenges than Virginia Coach Bronco Mendenhall anticipated last year.

"A year ago kind of caught me off guard, quite frankly," Mendenhall said, "The impact as (South Carolina Coach) Will (Muschamp) was saying of the travel and recruiting and practice and our game was a little bit earlier, kind of underestimated what that would look like."

Now on top of preparing for a crucial bowl game for both programs, coaches have had to turn their attention to locking down their 2019 recruiting classes.

"For the second time in my career having a cell phone at practice," South Carolina Coach Will Muschamp said, "That's the only thing that really changes for me."

Despite the extra workload, Mendenhall says Wednesday's signing day has been good for college football so far.

"I like the early signing day," Mendenhall said, "It now seems like February is forever away and I'm not sure we even need February."
