Former Blue Ridge standout McGhee keeps dancing with Liberty

SAN JOSE, Ca. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- Just moments after Liberty's upset win over No. 5 seed Mississippi State, former Blue Ridge standout Darius McGhee was in awe of what the Flames had done.

"It's crazy, like I said before I don't feel like it's hit me yet," the freshman guard said, "I feel like we haven't lost in forever."

In McGhee's defense, the Flames have not lost since February 23rd, winning six straight after Friday night's win. McGhee has played a role of the bench for Liberty this season having played in all 35 games. The former Blue Ridge guard is averaging 7.5 points per game in about 21 minutes of action on average.

On Friday night, McGhee played 12 minutes off the bench, but was in the game down the stretch and even hit a free throw to put Liberty up 73-70 with 50 seconds to go.

"It's crazy, I feel like it still hasn't hit me yet," McGhee said, "We were down 10 with like six minutes to go, nobody on our bench had any disbelief."

McGhee said the team just relied on Coach Ritchie McKay, a former Virginia assistant coach under Tony Bennett, and his defense down the stretch.

"Considering that we're a defensive team we all just knew once we started getting stops and we'll start getting great shots on offense and then the lead, we'll start chipping away," McGhee said.
