MINERAL, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- Brandon Smith's days as a student at Louisa County High School are numbered. On Wednesday, that number was two.
Smith will enroll at Penn State in early January. He'd been committed to the Penn State football program since May. On Wednesday morning, he made that commitment official, signing his letter of intent with the Nittany Lions at a brief ceremony in the Louisa County cafeteria.
"Barely slept last night," Smith admitted with a laugh afterward. "I was just full of excitement and joy, really.”
A five-star linebacker according to 247Sports.com, Smith will play in the 2019 Under Armour All-America Game in Orlando on January 3, then after a brief layover at home, report to Happy Valley on January 5. Smith finished his senior season with 135 tackles, including five sacks, plus nine forced fumbles and three pass break-ups.
Smith was named the 2018 Gatorade State Player of the Year earlier this month.
The final day of school at Louisa County before holiday break is Thursday. When his classmates return from break in January, Smith's college career will be underway.
“I’m very excited to start the next chapter of my book, so to say, in my life," Smith said. "And just spending these last few moments in the high school really means a lot."
