CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- Tony Bennett likes to break up the basketball season into three different phases -- non-conference play, ACC play and postseason play. With the Wahoos 100-64 win over Marshall Monday afternoon, phase one came to an end with the Cavaliers sitting at 12-0.
"We always break up our season into different phases and they went undefeated in phase one and that's no small thing," Bennett said. "We wanted to try to win every game and they did that."
The Cavaliers now turn their attention with the new year to a new phase of the season. ACC play opens Saturday afternoon at John Paul Jones arena when ninth-ranked Florida State (11-1) comes to town.
"Now we go into phase two, conference play and we understand how good the league is," Bennett added. "We'll enjoy the new year and get ready to go against high level, athletic ACC competition."
With the turn of the calendar, preparation remains key for the Cavaliers. Jay Huff points to the consistency the Wahoos use every day," such as keeping the same order in layup lines, as a way for the preparation level to remain high.
"This team, we always prepare well," Huff said, "we always prepare more or less the same way. Its just really fun to see how our preparation pays off."
"I think we feel extremely confident heading into ACC play," junior guard Ty Jerome added, "as we do before every game. Just going out and doing what we do."
