CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- Infielder Tanner Morris is officially a member of the Toronto Blue Jays organization.
Morris flew to Florida on Friday, where took a physical and signed with the Blue Jays on Saturday and practiced for the first time on Sunday, his father George said via email Sunday evening. Morris is expected to begin his pro career with either the Blue Jays' Class A Short Season team in Vancouver, or the franchise's Rookie Ball team in Bluefield, WV.
Morris, a graduate of the Miller School who spent the past two seasons as the everyday shortstop at Virginia, was Toronto's fifth round pick in last week's MLB Draft. He was a third-team All-ACC selection this spring after after hitting .353 with five home runs and 21 doubles, with 54 runs scored.
Because he's 21 years old, Morris was eligible for this year's draft after two college seasons.
