Patriots celebrate latest girls soccer state title

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- For the second time in three years their was cause for celebration after the Albemarle girls soccer team brought home the Class 5 State Title.

"We're pretty special, a lot of people have never heard of Albemarle before and so Central Virginia has made a name for themselves," head coach Amy Sherrill said.

A crowd of family and fans packed the gym at Albemarle High School to celebrate another state title for the girls soccer program. Senior Megan Schantz said this latest title made a statement to the rest of the state.

"Our program is one of the best in the state and our coaches and our support is phenomenal," Schantz said.

"It says a lot, it shows how competitive we are and how much talent we have as a team," senior defender Kate Yow said.

The accolades over the past four years back it up with four straight state semifinal appearances and two state titles.

"It is one of the best programs with the best people athletically and morally," senior forward Makinna Winterton said, "They're great girls and we have some wonderful coaches who understand the game and really push us to do our best."

The Patriots have had numerous all-state players over the years, but the one constant are the coaches and the culture.

"This program isn't dependent on one class of people or even one person, it's very dependent upon the coaching staff," senior forward Maggie McMullan said.

We're really just trying to set the culture of always believe and stick with us and crazy things are going to happen," Sherrill said.
