CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- For the first time in more than a dozen years, the watch list for the Davey O'Brien Award includes a quarterback from Virginia.
UVA's Bryce Perkins was among the 30 FBS quarterbacks on the 2019 watch list released on Tuesday for the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award, presented each season to the best QB in the country.
In his first season with the Wahoos last fall, Perkins set new UVA single-season records for yards of total offense (3,603) and total touchdowns (34). Perkins threw for 2,680 yards and ran for 923 yards in his 13 starts for the Cavaliers, joining Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray as the only players in the country with more than 2,600 passing yards and more than 900 rushing yards.
Perkins, a rising senior, and Clemson rising sophomore Trevor Lawrence were the only ACC quarterbacks on the O'Brien watch list. Perkins is the first UVA quarterback to appear on the preseason watch list for the Davey O'Brien Award since Marques Hagans in 2005, and Matt Schaub in 2003.
Contenders for the O'Brien will be trimmed to 16 semifinalists in mid-November, then trimmed again to three finalists two weeks later. The winner will be revealed at the Home Depot College Football Awards show on December 12.
