BLACKSBURG, Va. (CBS19 Sports) -- While Virginia Tech is 3-0 against UVA under head coach Justin Fuente, the Hokies are looking to bounce back from a six-win season last year.
Last week’s ACC preseason football poll marked the first time UVA was picked to win the Coastal division. It was also the first time since the league went into two divisions in 2005 that the Wahoos were picked to finish ahead of Virginia Tech.
Fuente’s total wins have gone from 10 in 2016, to nine in 2017 and finishing with just six last season.
Tech’s offensive numbers dipped from Fuente’s first season, when the Hokies won the coastal division. Their numbers bumped up a bit last year, but Fuente says his offense needs to take another step forward this fall.
“If you don't have all 11 executing, then you have no chance on offense,” said Fuente.
Fuente believes the key to success for the Tech offense is to play unselfishly and contribute both on and off the ball.
“We've had a huge emphasis on team plays, on plays away from the ball. I think we need to get back to that unselfish mentality," said Fuente. "Doing your job plus something. Dominating your man or a play away from the ball. Taking great pride in someone else's success through doing the dirty work.”
