CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- Aswin Lizen lured his opponent close to the net on court six before hitting a shot down the line, clinching a Virginia men's tennis win over No. 1 Wake Forest 5-2 Friday night.
Lizen clinched the match with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win. Moments later on court one, Carl Soderlund also clinched his match, 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-1.
After dropping the doubles point and falling behind 1-0, the Cavaliers won singles matches on courts 5, 3, 4, 6, and 1 in that order. Henrik Wiersholm was the only Virginia player to drop his singles match. That was the first match the senior has dropped this season.
Freshman Ryan Goetz rolled to a 6-0, 6-2 win on court five to tie things up 1-1. Fellow freshman Brandon Nakashima followed with a 6-4, 6-3 win on court three to give the Cavaliers a lead they would never give up.
Gianni Ross gave the Cavaliers a 3-1 lead with a win on court four before Lizen clinched the match on court six.
The contest between ACC rivals was a non-conference game. The teams will play again at Wake Forest on March 17 in the official ACC contest between the teams.
