Northrop Grumman Announces 800 Layoffs; Local Impact Unknown

October 27, 2011

Northrop Grumman has announced it will eliminate 800 more employees by the end of January 2012.

While the majority of layoffs are expected to occur at the company's Maryland locations, a media relations spokesperson was unable to tell CBS19 how many, if any, layoffs would occur at the Charlottesville facility on Route 29.

Sixty local employees were included in the company-wide purge of 500 workers in March.

“These workforce reductions are based on the current business outlook for Electronic Systems and the anticipation of further defense spending reductions. It is imperative that we realign staffing levels to better meet the requirements of our customers in what we anticipate will be an increasingly competitive and challenging business environment going forward," Northrop Grumman stated in a press release.

To help minimize the impact of these job eliminations, the company is offering a voluntary separation program at the affected campuses.
