Firefighters say they saw flames shooting out of the roof of the home, but luckily, no one was inside at the time.

Officials on the scene say it appears the home was under construction due to renovation work.

Firefighters initially went inside the home to try to battle the blaze, but they had to evacuate to tackle the flames from the outside.

"Lots and lots of flames, 30, 40 feet through the roof when I arrived," said Charlottesville Fire Department Deputy Chief Joe Powers. "The crews did a really good job of getting a handle on it quickly. But now as you can see behind me, the flames have subsided and we're working to get it out."

A neighbor says she smelled smoke in her home first and then saw the flames from an upstairs window, and she called for help.

Powers says firefighters will be working to get the situation under control and investigating what could have caused the fire for a couple of more hours.
