Wawa breaks ground on first Charlottesville-area store
ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The first Wawa convenience store and gas station in the Charlottesville area is set to open in the fall. A groundbreaking ceremony was held Tuesday morning.
The area's first Wawa store will be located at the intersection of Proffit Road and Route 29, north of Charlottesville.
Wawa has plans for rapid expansion in the Charlottesville area, which is the chain's western-most market in Virginia.
"We have four that are officially under contract in the local area, and I would say over the next five years, we would like to grow that to about ten," said Robert Yeatts, Director of Store Operations for Virginia for Wawa.
Other stores will be located at the intersection of Greenbrier Drive and Route 29 and the intersection of Richmond Road and Stony Point Road. A fourth store is under contract, but the location has not been announced.
Wawa operates more than 850 convenience stores and 600 gas stations in six states and Washington, D.C.
