CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- People in Charlottesville peacefully protested along Main Street on Friday, in solidarity with protestors in Minneapolis.

They stood with signs from sun up to sundown to bring attention to the death of George Floyd and the countless others before him.

Dr. Mark Fleming, the organizer of the protest, said he woke up Friday morning feeling like he needed to do something.

"Less talk, more action,” said Fleming. "It's time to come out and do something. Demonstrate that we are against racism. Every form, every level of racism, institutional, systemic, personally-mediated racism, needs to stop. And the only way we can do that is by actually acting on it."

Protestor Amanuel T. Gebremichael said he is fed up.

"Black America is fed up,” said Gebremichael. “I think we've reached our boiling point. Police are killing us with impunity. And I'm just livid. I'm livid. Everybody here is livid."

Some people who were passing by the protest decided they needed to join themselves. Claire King was one of them.

"For white people, there's always an option to avoid it,” said King. “To drive by, to not pay attention. But that's not the case for a lot of people of color. So it's on white people, it's white people's responsibility to use their privilege and their voices to support the voices of people of color who are being impacted every single day.”

Fleming said everyone needs to take a stand for there to be change.

"Join us. Stand with us. Do what you need to do on your individual platforms and whatever sort of position you hold regardless of statues,” said Fleming. “Everyone has a role to play in this and it should be less talk and more action."

Another protest demanding justice for black lives will be happening Saturday in front of the Charlottesville Police Department at 3 p.m.
