WESTMORELAND COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- After more than nine inches of rain fell last week in parts of Virginia, there was a partial dam failure in Westmoreland County.

The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources says it is taking action to quickly make repairs to the Chandler's Mill Pond Dam, which is just west of Montross.

According to a release, the storm that brought those nine inches of rain is considered a 200-year storm event.

Chandler's Mill Pond was actually dry ahead of the storm, because repairs were set to begin in July.

But it filled quickly during the storm, which caused water to overtop Route 3 where it crosses the lake.

DWR says all of the dam outflows were fully open but that was not sufficient to keep up with the volume of water that poured into the lake.

There was a partial breach of the dam that sent water levels dropping by several feet in a short period of time.

That breach cleared the water off Route 3, which then had to be inspected by the Virginia Department of Transportation and reopened on June 11.

DWR says employees monitoring the situation and the dam's status as well as water levels in the lake.

If there is another significant weather event in the near-term, DWR does not believe the dam, in its current state, will be able to hold enough water to impact the road again.

Since the Atlantic Hurricane Season is also underway, DWR says its main priority is to make emergency repairs to ensure the stability of the dam and prevent the lake from flooding the roadway.

Work on emergency repairs will begin as soon as possible, and DWR is reaching out to people in the nearby community about longer-term plans for repairs.
