CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- State Senator Creigh Deeds announced he is running for re-election in 2023.

Deeds, a Democrat, has been serving the 25th District since 2001. Under the newly redrawn legislative maps, he will now represent the 11th District.

Deeds says he is in the middle of legislation that is important to him, which is why he knows he wants to run again.

"Transform our mental health system to make sure that our mental health system meets the needs of people who need services no matter where they are in Virginia and we are really in the throes of that. We are in the middle of that work, the pandemic undid a whole lot of the things we are trying to accomplish,” he said.

Deeds says he is also the co-chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee and is working to reform the criminal justice system.

Even though he knows he's running, he says he won't ramp up his campaign efforts until after the general election this November.
