ALBEMARLE COUNTY Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital has a new cardiac rehab program.

The program is called Pritikin Intensive Cardiac Rehab (ICR). It enables the hospital to increase its focus on patient education and treatment.

This type of program has 72 sections to monitor people's hearts instead of 36 like other programs.

Pritikin ICR follows three main pillars of care: Nutrition focused on plant-based eating, healthy mindset focused on stress management, and exercise.

These steps will help people better understand the changes they need to make for their health and hearts.

"It's solidifying those changes that patients are asked to make," said Cathy Reece, manager of health and wellness. "It's a whirlwind from the time they come in, not understanding sometimes what brought them to us. We had a lot of time to be able to help patients understand and better be able to manage their disease and stay out of the hospital, the doctors’ offices, and improve their overall quality of life."

This program is the only one of its kind in the region and one of only 90 in the United States. It is offered three times per week.
