UPDATE at 2:05 p.m.: The Charlottesville Police Department says a suspect is dead following a Tuesday morning incident.

According to police, an Albemarle County Police Department detective spotted a person wanted in the city around 10:05 a.m.

The detective tried to detain the person, and he ran into a wooded area on Emmet Street near the Route 250 Bypass.

At that time, the suspect fired several shots.

Law enforcement established a perimeter and a shelter-in-place order was issued. A tactical team from ACPD then responded to take over the perimeter.

A release says the suspect then ran out of the wooded area, toward a parking lot where there were several people.

Officers attempted to stop him without using lethal force, but the suspect pointed a firearm at officers who responded by shooting him.

The suspect, now identified as 44-year-old Billy Sites, was taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center where he died of his injuries.

The Virginia State Police has now taken over the investigation into this incident and both CPD and ACPD are cooperating.

UPDATE at 12:25 p.m.: The Charlottesville Police Department says the area around the Route 250 Bypass and Hydraulic Road will be closed for a while following an officer-involved shooting.

A suspect who pointed a firearm at officers has been shot and is in critical condition at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

 There will be a press conference at 1 p.m.

 Schools in the area are resuming normal operations now that an all-clear has been issued.


UPDATE at 11:40 a.m.: The Charlottesville Police Department has negotiators on the scene trying to talk to an armed individual.

This person has reportedly fired several shots in the area.

People are urged to continue avoiding the area.


UPDATE: The Virginia Department of Transportation reports northbound Route 29 is shut down in the area.

Drivers should expect major delays.


UPDATE: Schools and businesses in the area of this incident have been told to shelter in place.

 


CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The Charlottesville Police Department has officers on the scene of an incident near the Red Roof Inn on Emmet Street.

According to a tweet, it is an active violent incident with a gun. 

People are asked to avoid the area at this time. Anyone who is already nearby should shelter in place.

There is a heavy police presence.
