LA LUZ, N.M. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A man from New Mexico has been arrested on a criminal charge out of Albemarle County.

According to the New Mexico State Police, 52-year-old Darren Wade Powell of La Luz was arrested Wednesday.

He was wanted on a felony warrant for criminal sexual penetration of a minor that was filed by the Albemarle County Police Department on Feb. 23.

ACPD says the offenses occurred while the minor was under Powell's care as a counselor.

Police say the investigation began on Feb. 23 when the New Mexico State Police Fugitive Apprehension Unit was contacted by the Tularosa Police Department.

TPD stated it had reason to believe that a counselor in that village’s school division was wanted on a felony warrant out of Virginia.

Once the state police confirmed that the warrant was valid, officers confronted Powell at his home.

He was arrested without incident and booked at the Otero County Detention Center, where he is awaiting extradition to Virginia.

ACPD says the investigation into this incident is ongoing, and anyone with information concerning this subject is asked to contact Detective Michael Schneider at (434) 296-5807 or CrimeStoppers at (434) 977-4000. Tips can also be emailed to [email protected].
