ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The Albemarle County Police Department arrested a 13-year-old Tuesday after receiving information the juvenile had a gun.

The teenager was found at a private alternative education program on Earlysville Road. That program is not affiliated with Albemarle County Public Schools.

According to ACPD, the suspect ran from police and was later found hiding in a dumpster. Police then took them into custody. The firearm was located nearby.

Because the suspect is a juvenile, police aren't releasing any information on their identity.

But ACPD confirms that the individual is linked to the ongoing gun violence in the area.

The teen is being held at the Blue Ridge Detention Center on charges of possession of a firearm on school property, possession of a firearm by a person under the age of 18, and obstruction of justice, resisting arrest, fleeing from a law enforcement officer.

This is an ongoing investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Jordan Weethee at (434) 296-5807 or CrimeStoppers at (434) 977-4000 or [email protected].
