CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The contest to determine the biggest biomedical advance of 2022 is ongoing, and all three of the nominees from the University of Virginia have made it to the second round.

Now two UVA discoveries are facing off against each other while the third is going up against one from the University of Pennsylvania.

This is part of the annual STAT Madness bracket tournament, which lets the public vote on the most significant biomedical discoveries from the previous year.

According to a release, this tournament aims to increase awareness of biomedical research and its impact on people.

The UVA contenders involve fighting neurological diseases, stopping breast cancer from spreading to other parts of the body, and preventing heart failure in older men.

The heart failure discovery is the one facing a contender from Pennsylvania, while the neurological disease one and breast cancer one are facing each other.

People are allowed to vote once a day in this tournament.
