ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- A farm in the Scottsville area is getting a grant to expand humane farming methods and increase its pasture-based livestock production.

According to a release, the nonprofit Food Animal Concerns Trust has awarded a Fund-a-Farmer Grant to Wayfinder Holistics.

The farm plans to use the money to improve the poor soil sound in the pastures to build healthier soil, plants and sheep.

“By adding ground limestone and planting cover crops of clovers, we are sowing the seeds of abundance for our flock of sheep and the land they graze upon,” said farmer Dan Goldstein. “By nourishing the soil with the right ingredients, we are creating a fertile foundation for a thriving ecosystem, where healthy plants and animals can flourish. This grant funding will allow us to further our mission of regenerative agriculture and honor our responsibility as stewards of the land. With every step we take towards a more sustainable future, we are reminded of the interconnectedness of all living things and the power of small actions to create a lasting impact.”

FACT awarded 87 grants, worth more than $253,000, to farmers and ranchers in 34 states.

The release says a recent survey of past grant recipients found the funding has produced a variety of long-term benefits, with 99 percent reporting their projects improved animal welfare, 91 percent experienced a positive environmental impact, and 90 percent found improved farm financial viability.

Since 2012, FACT has awarded more than 600 grants worth more than $1.1 million to farmers in 44 states.
