Notre Dame power surge leads to win over UVA
SOUTH BEND, In. (CBS19 SPORTS) -- Notre Dame launched six home runs on Friday night at Frank Eck Stadium to take the series opener 10-7 over No. 8 Virginia.
Estevan Moreno entered the night with only three homers on the season for the Fighting Irish, but equaled that amount in nine innings of play as the Cavaliers drop back-to-back Friday night games for the first time in nearly a year.
Virginia broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning sparked by an RBI-single from freshman Henry Godbout to take a 5-1 lead. But the Fighting Irish chipped away at the lead before Vinny Martinez hit a double down the left field line to bring home the go-ahead run in the fifth inning.
Moreno hit one of his three home runs off of each UVA pitcher on the night from starter Brian Edgington to Angelo Tonas and finally Chase Hungate in the eighth inning.
Virginia got great production from the top of the lineup with Griff O'Ferrall and Ethan O'Donnell each registering three hits a piece, while O'Donnell hit his ninth home run of the season.
The Cavaliers will look to even the series on Saturday with Nick Parker taking the mound against the Fighting Irish at 3 p.m.
