ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The war of words between the two Democratic candidates vying for the 55th District House of Delegates seat is heating up, and the topic is abortion in Virginia.

"I’m unequivocally pro-choice and I’m fighting to keep abortion care accessible in Virginia,” candidate Kellen Squire said in response to opponent Amy Laufer’s allegations.

Squire said Laufer has taken his words out of context and is using them to lie to voters.

Laufer sent out a flyer making some big claims about Squire over the weekend.

"You can see the contextual information was blurred out. I was trying to make an argument that the pro-life argument Republicans make is hypocritical,” he said.

He said the quote on the flyer reading "I am unashamedly pro-life" is from a 2016 blog post, and he understands it could be confusing without that context.

Laufer defends her decision.

"I quoted my opponent directly, and I guess he doesn't like that. I guess I think the truth is, you know, he's trying to dodge accountability,” she said.

Squire said he and Laufer have talked about these issues personally for years and have agreed on them at every interview and debate so far.

"I guess either she was lying then or she's lying now. But at some point, she was lying to our voters, and I think that's disqualifying," he said.

Laufer said that that part of the past doesn't matter because she thinks Squire isn't consistent.

"I've always been an unapologetic pro-choice champion. I believe that voters deserve better than this and I'm offering it to them," she said.

Early voting for the Democratic primary is underway and Election Day is June 20.
