ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The Ivy landfill will soon have a new use: 16 acres for Dominion Energy's new solar farm will power 750 homes in Albemarle County.

The farm is part of a major push from Dominion to power four million Virginia homes with solar power in 15 years.

"We're all in on solar energy,
said Dominion Energy spokesperson Tim Everly.

It's the company's first solar farm in the Charlottesville-Albemarle area, and it will directly affect those who live near it.

"Just because of the proximity of the people to that farm, the surrounding area will benefit from this particular solar farm," said Everly.

It's a 35-year lease from the Rivanna Solid Waste Authority, and the area will still have the recycling and transfer centers.

"The prospect of repurposing land that's already been developed or has very limited uses is really an ideal situation for us," Everly said.

This is Dominion's second solar farm project on reused land. It's also building one on an old coal mine in Southwest Virginia.

"We're breathing new life into a piece of land that doesn't have a whole lot of potential use for other things," Everly said.

Construction is set to begin in 2024, and the farm should be up and running by May 2025.
