CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- The 2023 In the Pink Tennis and Pickleball Charity Event is coming up on September 29 and 30th. It'll be held at eight different clubs across central Virginia over the course of two days.

The event began in 2002, coinciding with the founding of Marianne's Room. The goal of the event is to raise funds for numerous programs at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital.

"We raise money for all kinds of wonderful things, like free mammograms, support services are resources for women undergoing cancer treatment, and Marianne's room, which was established in 2002 to help support women through their cancer journey. It provides them with scarves, prostheses, emotional support, makeup tutorials when they lose their eyebrows, that kind of thing, just all those sorts of things that help with the emotional aspects of what they're going through," said Melissa Hoover, a member of the Women's Committee for the Martha Jefferson Foundation.

The In the Pink Tennis and Pickleball Charity Event is open to people of all skill levels, and you don't have to be a member of any of the participating clubs; the only ask is that participants wear lots of pink.

"Everybody just comes all decked out with wigs and fancy stuff, we give prizes to who wears the most pink, not who wins the event," Hoover said.

Participants can sign up with a partner or without; and you will be paired up with play partners based on whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced player. You can sign up for either the Friday event, which is from 6:30 to 9 p.m., or the Saturday event, which is from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., or you can sign up for both.

Hoover says its a great way to help out while having fun.

"I enjoy the connections that everybody's making, there's lots of people talking about their personal experience with cancer, so it really feels like you're doing a wonderful thing while having a blast at this same time. I have met so many women through this process and through being a member of the women's committee that have talked about the impact Marianne's Room has had on their life and the cancer resource center has had on their life that its a great way to have fun while doing something good."
