CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Students at Charlottesville High School want to start a new tradition called the Senior Sunrise.

On Friday morning, about 100 students came together on the football field to watch the sunrise.

CHS seniors wanted to start a simple, but meaningful, tradition ahead of their graduation.

Organizers say having the class come together allows the students to make up for lost time.

"We're the class of 2024, so we missed our freshman year completely because of COVID. And we really want to make that special to come back and end this high school experience on a great note by really coming together. We just wanted to build a community here and kind of like reflect on our time here together," said Maggie Heaphy, the senior class president at Charlottesville High School.

The first Senior Sunrise was filled with music, donuts, and long-lasting memories.

The class of 2024 hopes to make this a monthly tradition before graduation.
